New information boards in by the Zvartes Rock
When do the hazel and elm trees bloom? What can be made from the maple tree wood? For which purpose is the juniper used in the folk medicine? All this you can find out by the Zvārtes Rock, walking along the Forest Mother Trail, where you will find three information boards with information about 16 different forest trees and shrubs of Latvia.
For example, in the folk beliefs the rowan-tree is mentioned as a holy, magical tree which protects people and buildings. It is planted in front of houses; folk medicine uses berries, leaves and the bark. Berries are used for both to make herbal teas, and juice and jellies.
The forests along the Forest Mother Trail are only slightly changed by human activities. Here you will see the most common forest trees and shrubs of the Gauja National Park. The Amata Valley is home to a wide variety of plants. Here you can see also the whole life cycle of trees – from a small seed to mossy, rotten tree trunks. On the new information boards you will find the names of the trees in Latvian, Latin, English, German and Russian; descriptions and more detailed information: in Latvian and English. The author of drawings is Daiga Segliņa, the author of texts and composition – Līga Eglīte.
