Come and see the spring in the old valley of the Gauja River
The spring is coming! We invite everybody to go hiking along the ancient valley of the Gauja in Sigulda, where the sheet of snow slowly begins to shrink. From the brown caps spring out pussy willow catkins and the cheerful voices of birds notify that the white colours of the winter soon will be changed by the joyful green colours of spring.
The trails in the surroundings of the Gutmans cave are well-trodden already in winter. With appropriate footwear, they are convenient to walk along also when the snow begins to melt. The picturesque route begins from the Gutmans cave. It continues along the ancient coast of the Gauja with a healthy training by climbing up the stairs with about 300 steps, called also „cardio steps” by the local people. The trail is recommended for both nature observers and spring sensation seekers. From there in early spring opens a wide view to the surroundings of the Gutmans cave, as well as to the old valley of the Gauja. After the climb up it is possible to choose between two routes - the trail to the right or the one which goes to the left.
If you will go to the right, the trail will take you to the Turaida Museum Reserve. Almost every weekend there is an interesting event organized, which can be just observed, or you can take part in it as well. On the 19th of March everybody is welcome to celebrate the coming of spring with the Big day (Lielā diena) in the traditions of the Livs.
If you will go to the left, the trail will take you to Rata hill, and further to Taurētāju hill. In early spring, when the leaves do not interrupt the view, opens a great view to Sigulda and the old valley of the Gauja. While going downwards, you will need to use the skill of sliding down because in some parts the steps are covered with a pretty thick porous layer of snow. Once you have come down the hill, we recommend going to the Small cave and Gutmans cave, thus returning to the starting point, and visit the Visitor centre to have a rest and a cup of hot sweet chocolate or a coffee drink.
Very soon, on the 21st of March, the astronomical spring will begin. It is therefore particularly welcome to go to taste the spring water of the Gutmans cave and to greet the sun. Let’s meet in nature!
